While relatively similar to almost every cosmetic dental procedure, many people worry that when it comes to having oral implants fitted, getting the process started will take a lot longer.
In years gone by this was true, but thanks to things like X-ray machines and CT scanners now being commonplace in many dental surgeries, you can start your treatment with one single consultation.
But what does the fitting of dental implants in Melbourne actually involve? How long will it take and will there be aftercare?

Initial consultation
During your initial consultation about having dental implants, your dental team will assess your overall dental health and will take X-rays of your jaw. This is to ensure that there is sufficient bone to attach the implants to and to get a clear idea of the site.
If there isn’t, don’t worry! Many dentists offer a range of dental implants and so, if you are not suited for traditional endosteal fittings, they may suggest subperiosteal or micro options.
The fitting
And now, the day that many patients worry about; the fitting.
Depending on how many implants you are having fitted, this process may only take one session, which will take upwards of an hour.
Your dentist will take care to sufficiently numb your jaw prior to the fitting, which will involve incisions into the gum in precise locations, and drilling to make the hole for the implant. Once the implant(s) are placed, your team will sew up the surrounding gum with dissolvable stitches.
Aftercare
Once home, take care to not aggravate your implants; avoid spicy foods, alcohol and smoking. Do not eat hard foods and do not bite down using them until you and your dental team are certain that they have healed.
You may experience some discomfort for a few days post-fitting, but this should resolve itself provided there are no complications. If you notice excessive levels of discomfort, contact your dentist as soon as possible to check for implant movement or infections.
Prosthetics
Depending on the strength of your jaw when your implant was fitted, you will have to wait between 3-6 months for the prosthetics (or teeth) to be attached to the implant.
Once in the dental chair, the fitting of the teeth will not be painful and will literally involve your dentist screwing the prosthetics onto the visible part of the implants. This part can take up to one hour.
