Shikakai or Acacia concinna is a climbing shrub. The name “shikakai” means “fruit for hair”. It has been applied on hair for cleansing since ancient times. Shikakai is a natural detangler that makes your hair smooth and soft. Shikakai is rich in vitamin C and vitamin D and other essential phytonutrients that nourish the follicles and promote hair growth.
Reetha or Soap Nuts
Reetha has natural surfactants known as saponins, and this makes reetha an awesome natural cleanser. Surfactants are foaming agents that help wash away all the dirt and grease from your hair/skin. Most chemical based shampoos and soaps include harmful surfactants that degrade environment. Reetha or soap nut is a natural softener, so you don’t need any conditioner after shampoo.

Amla is a significant hair tonic that should be used frequently. The antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of amla provide you healthy scalp. It adds strength to hair roots and boosts hair growth and prevent premature graying.

Take 10 gm of shikakai pods, 10 gm of reetha berry, and 5 gm of amla pieces. This is the basic ratio; you can adjust the ingredients accordingly. If you don’t get amla, you can use lemon or orange.
Take all ingredients in a pan. Add 750ml of water and soak the ingredients overnight for minimum 8 hours. For strong shampoo, you can soak it for 24 hours. Heat the mix till it boils. Low the flame and let it boil for 5 more minutes. Leave the mix for simmer for 15 to 30 minutes. Remove it from the heat and let it cool. Crush the reetha, shikakai and amla when the mix comes to the room temperature. Strain this mixture before use.
Since you are not using preservative, you cannot make a large batch and store it into fridge. However, you can use your ice tray and fill it with this mix and use it as required.
