Two completely different door entry systems used to exist: good secure access control and automatic doors.

Modern materials and high-tech design make it possible to combine access control with automatic doors while keeping entry systems pleasing to the eyes.

Security is often related to fire, safety, and access control. Many places expect doors to open automatically when we approach commercial and public buildings.

Automatic Doors for Commercial Building Security

For example, high street shops and shopping centres now have automatic doors that open automatically in one or more descriptions.

This is to make it easy for customers to get into the buildings. In addition, they can be used to reduce energy consumption and help pedestrian traffic.

High-quality automatic doors and shopfronts allow for this luxury and offer excellent payback. Automated doors are so common; that you won’t be able to imagine a world without them.

Automatic doors were developed over many decades and have allowed us to create hands-free entrances and exits. You’re likely always looking for ways to improve your multifamily or commercial property, whether you own it, manage it, or develop it.

For example, automated doors provide tenants, visitors, and staff with a smooth, hands-free, safer entry experience. Learn more about automatic doors for buildings and their importance.

How Do Automatic Doors Work for Building Security??

A sensor is required to detect when an automatic door must be opened. The sensor sends a signal when it detects a cue to the door’s operating mechanism. The door opens when the machine receives the signal.

#1. Pressure sensors

Pressure sensors were introduced in the 1960s. They use pressure changes or weight to determine when the door should be opened.

Most pressure sensors are installed on mats or pads. The door will open when someone approaches it and steps on the mat.

This is because the pressure sensor detects a change in pressure (a person’s weight).

#2. Motion detection and optical sensors

Most automatic doors today have motion-detecting sensors. Most motion detectors detect movement using either passive infrared or microwave pulses.

Microwave beam motion sensors send pulses to microwaves that measure reflections from moving objects. On the other hand, passive infrared sensors measure temperature changes to detect body warmth.

Because they cover a greater area, sensors with microwave technology tend to be more expensive than those using infrared. In addition, they are susceptible to electrical interference.

#3. Video intercom or access control

Automated doors can also be detected when they should open through access control or intercom system.

The door does not sense pressure or motion but instead relies on an access control system signal to open. The signal can be sent from a fob or key card.

Automated doors controlled by smart video intercoms or cloud-based access control systems are great for multifamily and commercial properties.

However, they can only be opened to authorized persons. Multifamily and commercial buildings require an access control system for safety and fire regulations.

Access control systems and smart intercoms enhance the resident experience. Building staff can also manage property access permissions remotely via a web browser if the access control system/video intercom is connected to the cloud.

Staff members no longer have to visit the building to update their systems.

What does it take to open a door with a sensor?

Once the sensor detects someone entering the building, it sends a signal to the door opening mechanism.

An electric motor powers the door opening mechanism. It opens the door depending on the type of door.

There are many types of automatic doors:

  • Slider Doors: For two-way traffic, the automatic sliding door can be mounted on tracks or hung from overhead tracks.
  • Swinging Doors: Ideal to handle one-way traffic, swinging doors can be opened either in or outside.
  • Folding Doors: These doors are ideal for small entrances with limited space. They fold up to form a passageway.
  • Revolving Doors: Ideal in high-traffic areas. An automatic revolving door allows simultaneous entry and exit.

The type of pedestrian traffic on your property and the available space will determine the right door for you.

Automatic doors are a great option for buildings.

Now that we know how automatic doors work, let’s find out why. Why is it important to invest in automatic doors?

Automatic doors offer many benefits, including:

  • Energy Savings – Automatic doors can preserve conditioned air and reduce heating and cooling costs in your building.
  • Touchless Entry – Nobody can touch surfaces such as door handles with an automated door. This prevents germs from spreading.
  • Convenience – People appreciate the ease of building from one place, whether carrying groceries, their children, or bringing home heavy furniture.

How can automatic doors allow touch-less entry?

Touchless entry is possible with automatic doors. They allow people to enter the door without having to touch it.

Touchless entry is a popular choice for apartment residents. It eliminates the need to touch dangerous surfaces and makes your property safer.

You will need an automated door, access control system, or video intercom to allow touchless entry into a multifamily or commercial property with restricted access.
